Sculpted Silence - Conical Straw Hat

$150.00

Sculpted Silence transforms the traditional conical straw hat into a quiet sculptural form removed from its original purpose and cultural function. Covered in plaster, the object becomes suspended between preservation and disappearance — retaining the essence of its familiar silhouette while losing its practicality entirely.

Traditionally associated with labor, movement, protection, and daily life, the hat is altered through a process that freezes it in time. The plaster hardens its delicate woven structure, preventing it from being worn or used as intended. In this transformation, an object once shaped by human activity and environment becomes still, fragile, and contemplative.

The work explores themes of memory, identity, and material transformation by shifting an everyday utilitarian object into the language of sculpture. The textured surface conceals portions of the woven straw while subtly revealing traces beneath, creating a tension between exposure and concealment, softness and rigidity.

Restrained in color and rich in texture, the piece carries a sense of quiet permanence. Its familiar form remains recognizable, yet its function has been erased, allowing the viewer to engage with it beyond utility or cultural expectation. What once existed as a practical object is reintroduced as a meditative presence defined by silence, stillness, and form.

Through this act of immobilization, Sculpted Silence reflects on how objects can acquire new meaning when detached from their original role — transforming something functional and transient into something enduring and introspective.

Because each artwork is handmade, every piece is unique and may differ slightly from the photos.

Each edition is conceived as a tonal philosophy:

  • Ivory — a refined mineral white, echoing alabaster and bleached limestone. It carries a sense of quiet opulence, like museum plaster casts or ancient relics reinterpreted in contemporary form.

  • Ebony — a deep, absorptive black finish where the sculptural surface emerges only under grazing light. It suggests lacquered obsidian and architectural voids, emphasizing depth over visibility.
